17 April 2013 I Peris to debut for Hockeyroos

NTIS Hockey athlete Brooke Peris has gained selection into the Australian Senior Women's Hockey team (Hockeyroos) and will make her debut against Korea in an international home series this April 24th - 28th in Perth. The series is part of the Hockeyroos' preparation for the World League Tournament in London this June, where they will be vying to qualify for the 2014 Hockey World Cup.

16 April 2013 I Anderson wins AFL NAB Rising Star Nomination

Former NTIS AFL athlete Jed Anderson has been awarded an NAB Rising Star nomination in his debut season with the Hawthorn Football Club. In only his third game he secured the nomination and kicked a goal in Hawthorn's 55 point win over Collingwood on Sunday. This follows the birth of his son Elijah in the same week. The talented midfielder had 16 disposals, three tackles and snapped truly for his first goal in the AFL, to Help Hawthorn blast the Magpies off the MCG in front of more than 70,000 fans.

16 April 2013 I Peris, Duguid, Hayward and Luck in Junior World Cup Squads

NTIS Hockey athletes Brooke Peris, Elizabeth Duguid, Jeremy Hayward and Adam Luck have all gained selection into the Australian Women's and Men's U21 Junior World Cup squads, following their respective U21 Australian Championships held last week.

Peris and Duguid had standout performances at the National Women's U21 Hockey Championships held in Darwin. Hayward and Luck also made impressive contributions in raising the Northern Territory to 5th position overall at the National Men's U21 National Championships, held in Brisbane.

The Women's Junior World Cup will be held in Germany in late July and the Men's will be held in India in December.

14 April 2013 I Newton and Winch selected into Australian U17 Squad

NTIS Netball athletes Billie Newton and Rebecca Winch have gained selection into the Australian U17 Netball squad. This follows standout performances from them, while competing for the NT, at the Australian U17 Netball Championships held in Darwin this week. They will head to the Australian Institute of Sport in May for a training and development camp. Former NTIS Coach Stacey West, now Australian selector and National Pathway Manager, said "My role is now to track these athletes and to ensure they are in the system and ready for the 2017 World Youth Cup".

12 April 2013 I Irwin to make NRL debut for Gold Coast Titans

Former NTIS Rugby League athlete Sam Irwin will make his NRL debut at Skilled Park on Sunday 14 April, playing for the Gold Coast Titans against the Parramatta Eels. Irwin was a scholarship holder at the NTIS between 2006 and 2008, under former NTIS Coach Michael Rawiri.

The Titans will field two debutants for the first time in their seven-year history against the Eels with Irwin and winger Anthony Don drafted into the squad.

At 171cm and 79kg, Irwin is one of the smallest No.9s in the game, but he is also one of the most competitive players to pull on a Titans jersey. Titans junior recruitment manager Tom Searle is adamant he can become a star."He's got the temperament. His nickname is Tarzan because he's as strong as an ox for his size," Searle said. "He works hard on other parts of his game to overcome that."

Searle spotted Irwin playing for Northern Territory at the 2007 under-15 National Championships in Darwin. The youngster was a standout in the Australian Affiliated States competition. Searle signed him to a small scholarship and Irwin's family relocated to the Gold Coast. Irwin followed up with an Australian Schoolboys jersey in 2010 and spent two years in the NRL's under-20s competition.

"In a side that really struggled last year, he was just about the best player I saw in the whole competition," said Titans coach John Cartwright.

18 March 2013 I O'Neill-Thorne selected for Australia

NTIS athlete Tom O’Neill-Thorne has been selected in the 12 man Australian U23 Mens' Wheelchair Basketball Team to compete at the World Cup Qualifier for the Asia Oceania Zone in Thailand.
Australia will compete against Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Iraq and Iran in Bankok from the 10th-12th June, with the top 3 teams to progress to the World Cup in Turkey during September 2013.

Tom will also gain valuable experience after being invited to attend a training camp with the Australian Senior Mens' Rollers squad, to be held in Varese, Italy from the 25th-30th March.

18 March 2013 I Carroll helps Australia win Sultan Azlan Shah Cup

NTIS hockey athlete Joel Carroll has helped the Kookaburras to win their seventh Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia. Australia left it until late in the final to claim the title with Trent Mitton hitting the backboard with just four seconds left on the clock.

Mitton was on hand to deflect the ball past Goalkeeper Kumar and as the siren sounded he was swamped by his Australian team mates.  Australia was the only unbeaten team in the tournament.

Australia 3 defeated Malaysia 2 (half time 2-1).

30 January 2013 I Logan awarded Centre of Excellence scholarship

NTIS Cricket athlete Joel Logan has been offered a full scholarship to the Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence for 2013/2014. He is a right handed leg spin bowler and has been identified over the last 3 years due to performances at the National Youth Championships. Joel's scholarship will involve intensive training under Australia's best youth coaches and will include tours to the Subcontinent and the UK.

20 January 2013 I Luck and Peris win Australian Olympic Youth Festival Gold

NTIS athletes Adam Luck and Brooke Peris have won Gold Medals competing for Australia at the Australian Olympic Youth Festival in Sydney.

Australia pulled off two heart-stopping victories in the finals of the men’s and women’s hockey tournaments to give the host nation double gold.

Peris competed in a hotly contested battle between China and Australia who had already played out a draw in their pool match. The Chinese took an early lead with Zhang Xiaoxue scoring a deflected field goal in the 13th minute. Madison Fitzpatrick equalised early in the second half before Kathryn Slattery scored the winner with three minutes to go to give the Aussies the gold.

Luck competed as goalkeeper in the Australia’s men’s team throughout the tournament and was unlucky to miss the final. After opening a 3-0 lead, the Aussies let their Ashes rivals back into the match as the Brits levelled the match at 3-3 in the 57th minute. The British side then went ahead with a Sam French goal before Aussie star Jack Elliot sent it to golden goal with the scores even at 4-4. It was Will Gilmour who became the hero as he produced a brilliant individual effort beating several Great Britain defenders and firing off a powerful strike from close range for the winner to give Australia the gold.

16 December 2012 I Carroll signs with Mumbai Magicians

NTIS hockey star Joel Carroll has been bought by the Mumbai Magicians in the inaugural Hockey India League (HIL) auction, held on Sunday the 16th December.

The HIL is hockey’s version of the Cricket IPL with the first year of competition seeing 6 franchises competing for the title. In a different twist of selecting a hockey team, the 6 franchises each had the opportunity to select a squad of 24, compromising of 10 International Players and 14 Indian / Pakistani players from a player pool consisting of 14 nationalities over 152 players.

Joel was one of 25 Australian players who had put their names forward for the auction in hope of being a part of the HIL in 2013.

The Magicians purchased Carroll for $56,000, making him the second most expensive player on the Magicians list, behind Indian superstar & franchise marquee player Sandeep Singh.

Carroll’s price clearly indicates his standing in the international hockey community and is just reward for an outstanding 2012 season. That season included an Olympic Bronze medal, a record 5th consecutive Champions Trophy Gold medal and a player of the tournament award at the International Super 9’s series.

The Mumbai Magicians have a distinct Aussie flavour with the team being coached by Kookaburras' head coach Ric Charlesworth and current Kookaburras Matthew Swann, Glenn Turner & Matthew Butturini.

9 December 2012 I Carroll wins Champions Trophy Gold

NTIS Hockey athlete, Joel Carroll, has helped the Kookaburras to win the Gold Medal in the final of the Champions Trophy in Melbourne. The Kookaburras beat The Netherlands 2-1 in the first period of extra time, after the scores were locked at 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Kieran Govers smashed a spectacular reverse tomahawk past Dutch goalkeeper, Jaap Stockman, to score the winning golden goal. It was the Kookaburras fifth consecutive Champions Trophy win and the second for Carroll, who was part of Australia's winning team in 2010.

25 November 2012 I MacGillivray Assistant Coach on AIS Tour

NTIS Rugby League Coach, Duncan MacGillivray, has been selected to the position of Assistant Coach for the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Schoolboys Rugby League tour of the UK and France. MacGillivray will meet the team mid tour for games against the Welsh Under 18s, England Students and the British Community Lions. Also representing the AIS is NTIS athlete Luke Conaghty, who will be playing fullback and wing.

18 November 2012 I Afuhaamango Triple Gold at World Championships

NTIS Swimmer, Tahnee Afuhaamango, has won three Gold Medals and a Bronze at the Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation (DSISO) World Championships, in Loano Italy.

On day 1 of the meet she was 2 seconds faster than her nearest rival and won Gold in the final of the 50m Butterfly. She then backed up that performance, anchoring the Australian 4 x 50m freestyle relay team with the fastest swim in the final to win Gold again. Of the 32 swimmers who competed in the relay final, Tahnee's swim was almost 3 seconds faster that the second fastest time.

On day 2 Tahnee won a Bronze Medal in the 50m freestyle final and backed up later with a strong anchor swim in the 4 x 200m freestyle final to win Australia her third Gold Medal.

17 November 2012 I Hayward wins Bronze Medal at Sultan Johor Cup

NTIS Hockey athlete, Jeremy Hayward, has won a Bronze Medal competing for Australia at the Sultan of Johor Cup tournament in Malaysia. Australia defeated Pakistan 3-2 in the bronze medal playoff. The game was level at 2-2 after regulation time and Australia was able to convert an extra time penalty corner to secure the win.

16 November 2012 I Hullick selected for National Futures Camp

NTIS Hockey athlete, Jason Hullick, has been selected as one of 24 athletes to attend Hockey Australia's National Men's Futures Camp, to be conducted in Sydney from 11-16 January 2013.

16 November 2012 I Winch selected for Australian Schoolgirls Netball team

NTIS Netball scholarship athlete, Rebecca Winch, has been selected to play for the Australian 16 and Under School Sport Netball Team. Her selection was based on the strength of her performances while competing for the Northern Territory at the National 16 and Under Netball Championships, held in Darwin during May this year. The Australian team will compete at the International Netball Championships in Rotorua, New Zealand, in May 2013.

7 November 2012 I Afuhaamango on the eve of the DSISO World Championships

NTIS Swimmer, Tahnee Afuhaamango, is on the eve of competing for Australia at the 6th Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation (DSISO) World Championships. The Championships are being held in Loano, Italy, from the 15th to the 23rd November, 2012. NTIS Director, Dr. Ian Ford, issued a press release congratulating Tahnee on her selection for the upcoming competition.

31 October 2012 I Carroll selected for Kookaburras

NTIS Hockey athlete Joel Carroll has been selected to represent Australia in two major international Hockey tournaments before the end of the year. His first selection is in the International Super Series, to be held in Perth from the 22-25 November. The second is his selection to compete in the Champions Trophy, which will be held in Melbourne from the 1-9 December, 2012.

15 October 2012 I Luck and Hayward selected in National Junior Squad Tournaments

NTIS Hockey athletes Adam Luck and Jeremy Hayward have been selected to represent Australia in two separate tournaments for the National U21 Junior Hockey program. Jeremy Hayward will compete for Australia in the Sultan of Johor  Cup in Malaysia from the 11-18 November, 2012. Adam Luck will compete for Australia in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) in Sydney from the 16-20 January, 2013. Following the AYOF the 18 athletes to participate at the Junior World Cup qualifier will be announced.

2 October 2012 I Dowling wins National Junior Championships

NTIS Squash athlete Rhys Dowling claimed his fifth National Junior Championships when he won the Boys 17 Years age group with a marathon 11-7, 5-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-6 win over Victorian Sam Etjemai.

13 August 2012 I Carroll wins Olympic Bronze

NTIS Hockey athlete Joel Carroll has won a Bronze Medal at the 2012 London Olympics. The Kookaburras beat Great Britain 3-1 in the Bronze Medal playoff game. The scores were 1-1 at half time and the Aussies scored two unanswered second half goals to claim the win.

The Kookaburras finished their Olympic tournament with 4 wins and two draws. Their only loss was to Germany (4-2) in the semi-final, which relegated them to the Bronze Medal game. Carroll was solid in defence all tournament for his country, assisting the Australians to conceed only 10 goals in 7 games. Germany defeated Holland 2-1 in the final to claim the title of Olympic Champions.

6 July 2012 I Abbott injury forces Olympic withdrawal

NTIS Hockey striker Des Abbott has been replaced in the Kookaburras Olympic team due to an ongoing knee injury. The injury has failed to improve since his selection last month. It is a massive blow to Des, his family and all of his supporters, just 2 weeks short of the London Olympics. Coach Ric Charlesworth said, "Des is a walk up start, if his game is uncompromised, he is one of the world's most brilliant players, but the progressive knee injury has interferred with his game." 19 June 2012 I Conaghty selected in AIS Tour

NTIS Rugby League athlete Luke Conaghty has been selected in the Australian Institute of Sport Schoolboy Rugby League squad to tour England, France and Ireland in September 2012. Luke also gained selection into the Australian Combined Affilliated States team to compete at the Australian U18 Schoolboys Championships in Port Macquarie, commencing on the 4th July 2012.

NTIS Hockey athletes Des Abbott and Joel Carroll have been selected to represent Australia at the 2012 London Olympics. Minister for Sport and Recreation, Karl Hampton, formally congratulated Des and Joel in his press release.

8 April 2012 I Abbott and Carroll named in London Olympic Test Tour

NTIS Hockey athletes Des Abbott and Joel Carroll have been named in a 25 man Australian squad to compete in the VISA International Hockey Tournament Olympic Test Event and following European Tour Test series against Belgium and Germany. The Australian squad departs on the 26 of April and is in final selection mode for the upcoming Olympics. The VISA International Hockey Tournament Olympic Test Event will be held at the London Olympic venues. This is for players to familiarise themselves with the playing conditions and also for Olympic organisers to fine tune operations under tournament conditions.

1 March 2012 I Andrews and Logan in Australian U19 Cricket World Cup Squad

NTIS athletes Tom Andrews and Joel Logan have been selected in the 30 man preliminary squad for the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup. The tournament will be hosted between Townsville, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast in August 2012, with more than 400 cricketers from 14 nations competing.

1 March 2012 I Peris in Australia "A" Team for Korean Series

NTIS Hockey player Brooke Peris has been selected in the Australia "A" Team to compete against both Korea and Korean Telecom in the home series in Perth in March. The series opens against Korean Telecom with 4 games from the 6th-10th March and culminates in two games against Korea on the 13th and 15th March at the Perth Hockey Stadium.

1 February 2012 I Andrews and Logan selected to Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence

NTIS Cricket scholarship holders Thomas Andrews and Joel Logan have been invited to attend the 2012 edition of the National Under 18 talent camp. This is to be held at Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence in Brisbane later this month.

NTIS Coach Shane McDermott was suitably excited ”to see two of the Territory’s young spinners getting the opportunity to attend. Both players have amazing skills and potential and have been rewarded for their consistent performances at the Under 17 and Under 19 National Championships”.

31 January 2012 I Cartwright wins AIS Rugby League medal

NTIS scholarship holder Dylan Cartwright has won the Col Matthews medal for his efforts on the Australian Institute of Sport tour of France and the United Kingdom in December 2011. The month-long tour involved games against France, Wales, the England Academy and the British Community Lions.

Dylan Played four of the five games, including a start at lock in the 38-24 victory over the Lions. Also featuring in the tour was another NTIS scholarship holder, Chris Smith, who is now contracted with the Penrith Panthers U18 SG Ball team.

2012 Prohibited List released

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has released the 2012 Prohibited List which will come into effect on 1 January 2012.

The major change to the 2012 List which will affect Australian athletes and support personnel is to inhaled formoterol.

In its announcement of the 2012 List WADA advised that, “The List prohibits the administration of all beta-2 agonists except salbutamol (maximum 1600 micrograms over 24 hours), salmeterol when taken by inhalation, and now formoterol (maximum 36 micrograms taken over 24 hours).

”WADA also has a monitoring program that focuses on substances which are not on the Prohibited List, but which it wishes to monitor in order to detect patterns of misuse in sport. WADA has confirmed that in 2012 it will be monitoring the effects nicotine can have on performance when taken in oral tobacco products such as snus. WADA stressed that it was not the Agency’s intention to target smokers.

11 December 2011 Abbott in Kookaburras Champions Trophy win

Des Abbott and the Kookaburras Australian Hockey team overcame a determined Spain to win the Champions Trophy final 1-0 in Auckland. A late penalty corner was eventually converted by Eddie Ockenden, after a scramble in the goal circle. Coach Ric Charlesworth was pleased with the way the Australians defended, in what what he described as a very tough, close match.

27 September 2011 Lockley and Hayward selected for Australia A tournament

NTIS athletes Adrian Lockley and Leon Hayward have been selected to play for Australia ‘A’ in the matches versus New Zealand, India and Pakistan in Rockingham and Mandurah in October 2011.
