31 March 2014 I Peris selected for Hawkes Bay Tournament
NTIS Hockey athlete Brooke Peris has been named for the forthcoming Hawkes Bay Festival tournament in New Zealand, which begins on Saturday 5 April. The tournament line-up will bring together six of the world’s top ten nations: World champions Argentina, Oceania champions Australia, hosts New Zealand, China, Korea and Asia Cup champions Japan. The games represent the last competitive fixtures for the Australian women prior to selection for the World Cup, which will be made at the end of April.
The Hockeyroos’ opening clash is against Argentina at 12:00pm Australian Eastern time on Saturday (2:00pm local time). The tournament finishes on the 13 April, 2014.
29 March 2014 I Peris wins NT Sports Award
NTIS Hockey athlete Brooke Peris has won the Northern Territory Sportsperson of the Year.
The 21-year-old beat a strong field of contenders for the honour, including former NTIS cricketer Kane Richardson, at last night’s NT Sports Awards in Katherine.
Peris broke into the Senior Women's Hockeyroos side in 2013 and has already played 19 games for Australia and scored five goals, the first of them against Canada in Perth five months ago.
NTIS squash player, and Under-19 Australian Champion, Rhys Dowling won his second Junior Sportsperson of the Year crown, continuing a sequence of six underage national titles, a success rate that equalled Dan Jenson’s Australian record set in 1964. It is Dowling's second Junior Sportsperson award.
23 March 2014 I Hayward debut and 3 goals for Champion Kookaburras
NTIS Hockey athlete Jeremy Hayward played his debut game for Australia, against China, in the opening game of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia on March 13, 2014. Australian Coach Rick Charlesworth described Hayward's performance as "solid" in the Kookaburra's 7-0 win.
In Hayward's next appearance of the tournament, on March 16, he scored his first international goal against Canada, in another strong performance, which saw the Kookaburras win 6-0.
On March 20 he scored another goal in Australia's 5-1 victory over Korea and scored again in the Kookaburras 6-2 win over Malaysia on March 22.
Hayward played in the final on March 23 and helped the Kookaburras to win the tournament by defeating Malaysia 8-3.
6 March 2014 I Lee selected as reserve for Australian Baseball Team
Former NTIS Baseball athlete Wilson Lee has been selected as a standby reserve, for the Australian Mens Baseball Team (Southern Thunder), to play against US Major League teams Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
His selection is just reward after a breakout season in the Australian Baseball League, playing for the Adelaide Bite. The 22 year old Lee threw 16 dominant innings of relief pitching, striking out 22 hitters and conceding an earned run average of a meagre 2.16 runs per 9 innings pitched.
Southern Thunder will take on the Dodgers and Diamondbacks on Thursday 20th and Friday the 21st March 2014, at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Dodgers and Diamondbacks will then play each other, at the same venue on the 22nd and 23rd, in the first ever Major League Baseball opening series held in Australia.
27 February 2014 I Carroll and Hayward in Kookaburras Senior Squad
NTIS Hockey athletes Joel Carroll and Jeremy Hayward have been selected in the Australian Kookaburras National Senior squad for 2014. Jeremy Hayward has also been named in the Australian team to compete at the Azlan Shah tournament in Malaysia on the 10th-24th March. Jeremy's older brother Leon Hayward has been named in the Senior Development squad for 2014.
18 February 2014 I Hullick in International Futures Test
NTIS Hockey athlete Jason Hullick recently attended the Hockey Australia futures camp after strong performances during 2013 at both Under 21 & Under 18 National Championships. Jason’s selection saw him attend a week long camp in Brisbane with the best U18 Hockey players in Australia.
The camp incorporated training sessions, holistic educational seminars and 2 Test Matches against the New Zealand U18 team. Athletes were selected for the Tests based on performances at the camp. Jason earned the right to play in the 2nd Test and performed well in an Australian victory.
6 February 2014 I Pisel selected for NSW Futures League team
Former NTIS Cricket athlete Patrick Pisel has been selected by Cricket NSW in the Futures League side to take on Tasmania in a four day fixture at Blacktown International Sportspark starting Monday 10 February.
The side, which is captained by former NSW Blues squad member David Dawson, contains some of the brightest talent on the Sydney Grade cricket scene. 19 year old Pisel is a right hand batsman who started as a junior player with Darwin Cricket Club, progressing through to Premier Grade. He was an NTIS scholar and represented the NT at U17 and U19 level. He is now playing for Mosman Cricket Club and is currently averaging 47 this season.
5 February 2014 I Scrimegour selected in U17 Team of the Championships
Former NTIS Cricket athlete, and U17 Northern Territory Team Captain, Kyle Scrimegour was selected in the "Team of the Championships", following the Australian U17 Cricket Championships in Adelaide. Kyle scored a record 200 not out against the ACT in Round 4. Kyle finished third in the batting aggregate and averages for the series, making an impressive 302 runs from 5 innings and taking 12 wickets to be the leading wicket taker in the tournament.
4 February 2014 I Andrews selected for U19 Cricket World Cup
Former NTIS Trial athlete Thomas Andrews has been selected in the Australian Under 19 Team to compete in the ICC Under 19 World Cup, in the United Arab Emirates, from the 14 February to the 1 March. Tom represented the Territory in this year’s Under 19 Championships in Hobart and played for Darwin Cricket Club. He has also been selected for an AIS Scholarship with Cricket Australia.
NTIS Cricket Head Coach Tony Judd will also be attending the Group Stages of the World Cup as the Performance Analyst and Assistant Coach of the Scotland Under 19 Team.
2 January 2014 I Carroll and Kookaburras finish fourth in World League
NTIS Hockey athlete Joel Carroll and the Australian Men's Hockey team have finished fourth at the Hockey World League Finals. The Kookaburras were outside the medals placing 4th behind Gold Medal winners the Netherlands, New Zealand (Silver) and England (Bronze).
16 January 2014 I Dowling and Australia Trans Tasman Champions
NTIS Squash athlete Rhys Dowling has helped Australia win the Junior Trans Tasman Squash Cup against New Zealand in Palm Beach, Queensland. Australia won the two day Test series 18-16. The Junior Squash Test comprised the total combined results from the boys and girls U13, U15, U17 and U19 age levels. Dowling's U19 performance was so dominant that he won all 6 sets, over two games, in only 37 minutes.

NTIS Hockey athlete Brooke Peris has been selected to play for the Australian Women's Hockey team in their upcoming tour of South Africa. The Hockeyroos will play 3 official Tests against South Africa, and 4 practice matches against the Netherlands, as part of their preparations for this year's Hockey World Cup.
10 January 2014 I Wiltshire wins Australian Sailing triple crown
NTIS Sailing athlete Hamish Wiltshire takes a triple victory by winning the 2014 Australian Youth Championship and the Yachting Australia Grand Prix Series in the Laser 4.7 Class after winning the Australian 4.7 Laser Championship.
Hamish sailed consistently throughout the Youth Championship to finish with three firsts, one fourth, seventh, eighth, ninth and eleventh after two drops to give a final score of 42. This was equal points with Victoria’s Jack Graves however after a count back Hamish was awarded the win and is the 2014 Laser 4.7 Youth Champion.
Hamish's consistent performance throughout the year winning the Australian 4.7 Laser Championship, Australian Youth Championship, Queensland Youth Championship, finishing second in the NSW State Championship and third in the ISAF World Cup put him ahead of the rest of the Australian Youth Sailors giving him the Yachting Australia Grand Prix overall win.
7 January 2014 I Dowling selected for squash Test
NTIS Squash athlete Rhys Dowling has been selected to represent Australia in a 2 game Test series against New Zealand. The Test takes place at the Palm Beach Aquatic and Squash Centre on the Gold Coast from the 15th and 16th January. Dowling is one of three Australians competing the Under 19 boys division.
15 December 2013 I Hayward stars in Junior World Cup
NTIS Hockey athlete Jeremy Hayward was one of the stars for Australia’s Under 21 men, the Burras, as they claimed fifth place at Hockey’s Junior World Cup on Sunday. Hayward scored the equalizing goal, keeping Australia in the game at 2-2. The Burras twice had to come from behind to take the European Junior Champions, Belgium, to a shoot-out before winning 3-2.
10 December 2013 - Peris takes Silver in World League Final
NTIS Hockey athlete Brooke Peris and The Hockeyroos had to settle for silver at the inaugural Womens' World League tournament in Tucuman, Argentina. An inspired comeback saw the Olympic champion Netherlands claim the gold medal, cancelling out Australia’s half time advantage to win 5-1.
Despite the result, the silver medal caps an excellent year for the Hockeyroos, who have also won the Oceania Cup and World League Semi-Final Tournament gold medals, the International Super Series title and qualified for the 2014 World Cup in The Hague.
26 November 2013 - Judd invited to coach in Australian XI against England
NTIS Cricket Coach Tony Judd has been invited as an Assistant Coach by Australian Chairmans XI Manager Greg Chappell and Head Coach Troy Cooley to assist the Australian Representative Team with their pre match practice and preparations during England’s historic Ashes Tour match in Alice Springs.
Also competing in the match are former NTIS athletes Luke Robins and Tom Clements.
25 November 2013 I Gahan and Munchow success on AIS Rugby League tour
NTIS athletes Richard Munchow and Calum Gahan have had success, competing for the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Rugby League team, on their recent tour of New Zealand.
Richard Munchow featured in the centres for the AIS Rugby League team scoring tries 2 tries in their opening game against NZ Westcoast U18s.
Calum Gahan started at hooker for the AIS, receiving the opposition man of the match award. The AIS team won the first game of the tour 78-6, the second game against Otago/Southland Province 76-8 and the third match against the Canterbury U18s 50-4.
News also this week that former NTIS athlete Chris Smith has been named in the U20’s NSW State of Origin pathway camp squad.
20 November 2013 I O'Neill-Thorne stars in Aussie tournament victory
NTIS Wheelchair Basketball athlete Tom O'Neill-Thorne has led the Australian Rollers to victory in Japan at the 2013 Kitakyushu Champions Cup at the weekend. The Rollers played powerful international sides South Korea, host nation Japan and Paralympic Gold Medallists, Canada in the tournament.
The Canadians beat Australia in the gold medal match at the London Paralympics last year and had the Rollers’ measure again in the first match of the cup, in a thrilling 52-51 contest. The Rollers started slowly against Japan in the second match but pulled away late to win 63-48. Australia had little difficulty against South Korea in the final round-robin match, winning 86-54. The victory set up a rematch with Canada in the final and the Rollers produced their best match of the tournament to beat their rival 67-48.
O'Neill-Thorne was rewarded for his outstanding form during the cup by being named in the tournament’s All Star Five along with fellow Australian Jannick Blair.
The team is now in Thailand for this week’s Asia-Oceania World Championship qualification tournament in Bangkok. Australia will face the best teams in the region for one of three places in next year’s Men’s Wheelchair Basketball World Championship, which will be played in Incheon, South Korea.
13 November 2013 I Peris and Duguid earn National honours
Northern Territory Institute of Sport (NTIS) head hockey coach Nick Lenoir today congratulated scholarship holders Brooke Peris and Elizabeth Duguid for earning national selection.
Star striker Brooke Peris, the cousin of Olympic gold medallist Nova Peris, has been named in the Hockeyroos team to compete at the World League Finals in Argentina later this month, as well as gaining 2014 National Senior Squad selection along with a 2014 Hockey Australia centralised scholarship.
And leading goalkeeper Elizabeth Duguid has been named in the 2014 Hockeyroos Development Squad.
3 November 2013 I Peris and Hockeyroos win Oceania Cup
NTIS athlete Brooke Peris and the Australian Women's Hockeyroos have won the Oceania Cup in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon. They defeated world number three side New Zealand, after the final finished with the scores locked at 2-2 at the end of regulation time, with a sudden death shoot-out victory.
Peris started in the final capping off a solid tournament, as she also scored goals in the previous qualification rounds against New Zealand (1) and Papua New Guinea (2), bringing her international tally to 4 goals in just 10 games.
30 October 2013 I Peris goal for Hockeyroos
NTIS Hockey athlete Brooke Peris has scored her second international goal for the Australian Womens Hockey team (Hockeyroos), while competing at the Oceania Cup in New Zealand. Peris' goal in the 31st minute came just a week after her first international goal against Canada.
She executed a low reverse stick shot that went underneath the goal keeper and inside the far post to put the Hockeyroos 2-1 ahead. Unfortunately, it was not enough as the New Zealanders replied with the equalizer before half time and scored the match winner in the 60th minute to win 3-2.
23 October 2013 I Duguid and Peris earn Canada Series selections
NTIS Hockey athletes Elizabeth Duguid and Brooke Peris earned selection to play for the Australian Hockeyroos, in the two Test series against Canada, on the 22 and 23 October in Perth. In game one Brooke Peris scored her maiden Test goal in a 3-0 victory and both Peris and Duguid featured in the game two win, also 3-0.
19 October 2013 I Tahnee sets new World Record
NTIS Down Syndrome Swimming athlete Tahnee Afuhaamango has set a new Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation (DSISO) World Record at the 32nd Open and Masters swim carnival in Katherine, N.T. She claimed the new 50m Butterfly DSISO World Record, posting a lightning 38.72 seconds for the distance.
18 October 2013 I Hayward earns Junior World Cup selection
NTIS Hockey athlete Jeremy Hayward has gained selection into the Australian Under 21 men’s squad for December’s Junior World Cup in New Delhi, India. The Junior World Cup is the most prestigious tournament in age group hockey and features the World’s top 16 nations. Australia’s men have been drawn in Pool B of the opening phase, alongside Argentina, France and Spain. A top-two finish in the pool is required to progress to the quarter finals.
The Junior World Cup squad will come together in Perth in mid-November where they will play two matches against New Zealand’s Junior Black Sticks on 28 and 29 November before departing for India on 1 December.
14 October 2013 I O'Neill-Thorne selected for Australian Senior Team
NTIS Wheelchair Basketball athlete Tom O'Neill-Thorne has earned selection into the Australian Men's team (Rollers) to play at the Asia Oceania qualifying tournament in Bangkok, Thailand from the 20th to 30th November, 2013.
As part of the Rollers Men’s program, Tom has been invited to participate in the pre AOZ ‘Kitakyushu Champions Cup’, being hosted in Fukuoka, Japan from the 12th – 18th Nov prior to heading to Bangkok for the IWBF qualifying tournament.

1 October 2013 I Dowling crowned Australian Junior Champion
NTIS Squash Athlete Rhys Dowling has been crowned Australian Junior Champion after winning the final of the Australian U19 Junior Squash Championships in Canberra. Rhys won the final by defeating Darcy Evans 12-10, 11-7, 5-11 and 11-4.
24 September 2013 I Hullick selected for Australian Futures Squad
NTIS Hockey athlete Jason Hullick has been selected by Hockey Australia into the Australian Futures squad. Hockey Australia conducts an annual National Futures camp for potential international athletes. This camp is proposed to be held in Brisbane from the 3rd February to the 7th February 2014.
This provides an opportunity to play the New Zealand U18 National Futures Group, with two official matches proposed on the 5th and 6th of February 2014.
15 September 2013 I O'Neill-Thorne helps Spinners to Bronze Medal
NTIS athlete Tom O'Neill-Thorne has played a pivotal role in the Australian Spinners' Bronze Medal win, at the IWBF U23 Mens' World Wheelchair Basketball Championships, in Adana, Turkey. The Spinners defeated Great Britain, in the Bronze Medal final, in a thrilling contest 54-52.
O'Neill-Thorne starred (9 points, 11 assists, 6 rebounds) along with Luke Pople (19 points, 7 rebounds), continuing their amazing form, over the week long tournament, into the Bronze medal clash.
14 August 2013 I O'Neill-Thorne selected for Australian U23 team
NTIS Wheelchair Basketball athlete Tom O'Neill Thorne has been selected to play for the Australian U23 team (Spinners) to compete at the upcoming 2013 WBF U23 Mens' World Championships.
The Championships take place in Turkey from 7-14 September. The Spinners will begin their campaign on Saturday 7 September against Sweden, and will face Venezuela, Italy, Turkey and Japan in their pool.
11 August 2013 I Elliott scores Ashes Century
NTIS visiting athlete Sarah Elliot scored 104 for the Australian Southern Stars in the one off Ashes Cricket Test against England. She also took two catches including a caught and bowled to dismiss England opener Arran Brindle in the second innings. The match ended in a draw after two positive declarations by Australia to push for a result. Australia only lost 11 wickets in both innings with Elliott's 104 being the top Aussie score for the Test. England's Heather Knight scored 157 in the first innings to claim player of the match honours.
29 July 2013 I Duguid and Peris selected in Junior World Cup Team
NTIS Hockey athletes Elizabeth Duguid and Brooke Peris have been selected into the Australian Womens' Junior World Cup Team. 20 Athletes were selected initially for this tour with the final 18 named on the 25th July, following the final practice game, leading into the Junior World Cup.
The tournament commenced in Monchengladbach, Germany, on the 27th July, with Australia defeating India 6-1, with Brooke Peris scoring 2 goals. Game two was against Russia which Australia won 6-0.
18 July 2013 I McManus Scores in Origin Decider
Former NTIS Rugby League athlete James McManus was selected for the New South Wales Blues, for game 3 of the Australian Rugby League State of Origin Series last night. In a series decider that was locked at one game apeice heading into last night's clash, McManus crashed his way through past two defenders, to score the Blues' first try of the match. However, the powerful Queensland Maroons juggernaut won 12-10, to set a new record of 8 consecutive State of Origin series wins.
6 July 2013 I Wiltshire wins Youth Championships
NTIS Sailing athlete Hamish Wiltshire has won the Laser 4.7m class at the Australian Midwinter Youth Championships, held at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. He finished first overall, in a fleet of 26 boats, winning the U17 boys and girls division. Fellow NTIS sailor Lewis Radonich finished 5th.
2 July 2013 I Kurnoth selected in CAS Merit Team
NTIS Rugby League athlete Corey Kurnoth has won selection in to the Combined Affiliated States Merit team after standout performances at the Under 15 Combined Affiliated States Championships. As Captain of the NT team he scored 3 tries, had a major hand in many others and was the NT player of the tournament. His Coach Duncan MacGillivray said, "Corey led from the front both on and off the field, was very mature and very focussed in his approach to the tournament and the team and thoroughly deserved his selection".
25 June 2013 I Duguid and Peris selected in Junior World Cup Squad
NTIS Hockey athletes Elizabeth Duguid and Brooke Peris have been selected into the Australian Womens' Junior World Cup Touring squad. 20 Athletes have been selected initially for this tour, with the final 18 being named on the 25th July following the final practice game, leading into the Junior World Cup, commencing in Germany in late July.
17 June 2013 I NTIS Awards announced for 2012-2013
Joel Carroll has won the Carlton and United Breweries Athlete of the year award for 2012-2013. It capped an outstanding year for Carroll with a Bronze medal at the London Olympics, a Champions Trophy Gold Medal, a Gold Medal in the Lanco Super 9 Series and a Gold Medal at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.
Rhys Dowling won the Carbine Club NT Junior Athlete of the Year after winning the Australian U17 Squash Championships, captaining the Australian Junior Mens' Squash Team at the World Championships in Doha and was selected in the Australian U21 squad.
The Carbine Club NT Awards for Excellence went to Jamie Collins (Netball) and Adam Luck (Hockey). Jamie Collins represented the NT U19 as vice captain in 2012 and the Senior ANL NT Team, the Territory Storm and has since relocated to Melbourne to study a Bachelor of Arts at Melbourne University. Jamie was the top NT Certificate of Education and Training Indigenous student in 2012.
Hockey goalkeeper, Adam Luck was recently selected in the Australian U21 Hockey Squad. In 2012 he represented the NT at the U21 National Championships and the Territory Stingers in the Senior Australian Hockey League. Adam was a Gold Medallist at the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival. The talented goalkeeper is also studying for a Law and Commerce degree at CDU.
11 June 2013 I O'Brien and Gahan selected for CAS Team
NTIS Rugby League athletes Kyle O'Brien and Calum Gahan have been selected to represent the Combined Affiliated States team at the Australian Secondary Schoolboys' Championships. The tournament runs from the 8-12 July, with their first two games against powerhouses Queensland and New South Wales. NTIS Coach Duncan MacGillivray has also been selected as the Head Coach of the Combined Affiliated States team.
3 June 2013 I Winch selected in Team of the Tournament
NTIS Netball athlete Rebecca Winch has been honoured with selection into the Team of the Tournament, at the International 16 and Under School Sport Netball Championships in Rotorua, New Zealand. She competed for Australia in both Goal Attack and Wing Attack, producing strong goal shooting performances and emerging as a leader for the team. The Australian team finished third overall in the Championships, by defeating Malaysia 35 to 21 in the playoff for third and fourth place.
28 May 2013 I Elliot named in Southern Stars Ashes team
NTIS visiting Cricket athlete Sarah Elliot, has been named in the Australian Womens' Cricket team to contest the Ashes against England in August. Elliot had been absent from international duties for the last 18 months after suffering from health issues, and also following the birth of her son, Samuel. Her steady batting and offspin bowling have been major pluses for Australia, in previous campaigns against England, and selectors have backed her abilty to compete in English conditions. She will play in the one off Ashes Test between 11-14 August, after which she will return to Australia. The remaining Southern Stars will then play three one day matches and three T20 games to decide the overall winner of the Ashes.

NTIS Hockey athletes Liz Duguid and Brooke Peris have been named in the Australian Hockey U21 Jillaroos' Tour of Gifu, Japan. Details of the tour dates and games are yet to be released.
22 May 2013 I Leon Hayward and Adrian Lockley named for Australia "A"
NTIS Hockey athletes Leon Hayward and Adrian Lockley have been named as part of the squad for the Australia "A" SIS/SAS China Tour from 19 June to 1 July, 2013. Hayward has been selected in the touring squad while Lockley has been named as first reserve, as part of the 5 match tour. The Provincial Liaoning Men's Hockey team are the hosts, whose team includes 11 China National squad players, and have won the National Chinese Hockey Championships for the last 6 consecutive years.

NTIS Hockey athlete Jeremy Hayward has been selected in the Australian Junior Men's Hockey squad for their European tour in June. The tour includes 2 Tests versus Germany and 3 Tests versus The Netherlands, in addition to a drag-flicking camp at the end of the tour.

NTIS Hockey athlete Joel Carroll has been selected in the Australian Men's Hockey squad upcoming European Tour. The tour includes Round 3 of the FIH World League Semi-Final, in addition to preparatory Tests versus The Netherlands and Belgium.
17 April 2013 I Peris to debut for Hockeyroos
NTIS Hockey athlete Brooke Peris has gained selection into the Australian Senior Women's Hockey team (Hockeyroos) and will make her debut against Korea in an international home series this April 24th - 28th in Perth. The series is part of the Hockeyroos' preparation for the World League Tournament in London this June, where they will be vying to qualify for the 2014 Hockey World Cup.
16 April 2013 I Anderson wins AFL NAB Rising Star Nomination
Former NTIS AFL athlete Jed Anderson has been awarded an NAB Rising Star nomination in his debut season with the Hawthorn Football Club. In only his third game he secured the nomination and kicked a goal in Hawthorn's 55 point win over Collingwood on Sunday. This follows the birth of his son Elijah in the same week. The talented midfielder had 16 disposals, three tackles and snapped truly for his first goal in the AFL, to Help Hawthorn blast the Magpies off the MCG in front of more than 70,000 fans.
16 April 2013 I Peris, Duguid, Hayward and Luck in Junior World Cup Squads
NTIS Hockey athletes Brooke Peris, Elizabeth Duguid, Jeremy Hayward and Adam Luck have all gained selection into the Australian Women's and Men's U21 Junior World Cup squads, following their respective U21 Australian Championships held last week.
Peris and Duguid had standout performances at the National Women's U21 Hockey Championships held in Darwin. Hayward and Luck also made impressive contributions in raising the Northern Territory to 5th position overall at the National Men's U21 National Championships, held in Brisbane.
The Women's Junior World Cup will be held in Germany in late July and the Men's will be held in India in December.
14 April 2013 I Newton and Winch selected into Australian U17 Squad
NTIS Netball athletes Billie Newton and Rebecca Winch have gained selection into the Australian U17 Netball squad. This follows standout performances from them, while competing for the NT, at the Australian U17 Netball Championships held in Darwin this week. They will head to the Australian Institute of Sport in May for a training and development camp. Former NTIS Coach Stacey West, now Australian selector and National Pathway Manager, said "My role is now to track these athletes and to ensure they are in the system and ready for the 2017 World Youth Cup".
12 April 2013 I Irwin to make NRL debut for Gold Coast Titans
Former NTIS Rugby League athlete Sam Irwin will make his NRL debut at Skilled Park on Sunday 14 April, playing for the Gold Coast Titans against the Parramatta Eels. Irwin was a scholarship holder at the NTIS between 2006 and 2008, under former NTIS Coach Michael Rawiri.
The Titans will field two debutants for the first time in their seven-year history against the Eels with Irwin and winger Anthony Don drafted into the squad.
At 171cm and 79kg, Irwin is one of the smallest No.9s in the game, but he is also one of the most competitive players to pull on a Titans jersey. Titans junior recruitment manager Tom Searle is adamant he can become a star."He's got the temperament. His nickname is Tarzan because he's as strong as an ox for his size," Searle said. "He works hard on other parts of his game to overcome that."
Searle spotted Irwin playing for Northern Territory at the 2007 under-15 National Championships in Darwin. The youngster was a standout in the Australian Affiliated States competition. Searle signed him to a small scholarship and Irwin's family relocated to the Gold Coast. Irwin followed up with an Australian Schoolboys jersey in 2010 and spent two years in the NRL's under-20s competition.
"In a side that really struggled last year, he was just about the best player I saw in the whole competition," said Titans coach John Cartwright.
18 March 2013 I O'Neill-Thorne selected for Australia
NTIS athlete Tom O’Neill-Thorne has been selected in the 12 man Australian U23 Mens' Wheelchair Basketball Team to compete at the World Cup Qualifier for the Asia Oceania Zone in Thailand.
Australia will compete against Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Iraq and Iran in Bankok from the 10th-12th June, with the top 3 teams to progress to the World Cup in Turkey during September 2013.
Tom will also gain valuable experience after being invited to attend a training camp with the Australian Senior Mens' Rollers squad, to be held in Varese, Italy from the 25th-30th March.
18 March 2013 I Carroll helps Australia win Sultan Azlan Shah Cup
NTIS hockey athlete Joel Carroll has helped the Kookaburras to win their seventh Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia. Australia left it until late in the final to claim the title with Trent Mitton hitting the backboard with just four seconds left on the clock.
Mitton was on hand to deflect the ball past Goalkeeper Kumar and as the siren sounded he was swamped by his Australian team mates. Australia was the only unbeaten team in the tournament.
Australia 3 defeated Malaysia 2 (half time 2-1).
30 January 2013 I Logan awarded Centre of Excellence scholarship
NTIS Cricket athlete Joel Logan has been offered a full scholarship to the Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence for 2013/2014. He is a right handed leg spin bowler and has been identified over the last 3 years due to performances at the National Youth Championships. Joel's scholarship will involve intensive training under Australia's best youth coaches and will include tours to the Subcontinent and the UK.

20 January 2013 I Luck and Peris win Australian Olympic Youth Festival Gold
NTIS athletes Adam Luck and Brooke Peris have won Gold Medals competing for Australia at the Australian Olympic Youth Festival in Sydney.
Australia pulled off two heart-stopping victories in the finals of the men’s and women’s hockey tournaments to give the host nation double gold.
Peris competed in a hotly contested battle between China and Australia who had already played out a draw in their pool match. The Chinese took an early lead with Zhang Xiaoxue scoring a deflected field goal in the 13th minute. Madison Fitzpatrick equalised early in the second half before Kathryn Slattery scored the winner with three minutes to go to give the Aussies the gold.
Luck competed as goalkeeper in the Australia’s men’s team throughout the tournament and was unlucky to miss the final. After opening a 3-0 lead, the Aussies let their Ashes rivals back into the match as the Brits levelled the match at 3-3 in the 57th minute. The British side then went ahead with a Sam French goal before Aussie star Jack Elliot sent it to golden goal with the scores even at 4-4. It was Will Gilmour who became the hero as he produced a brilliant individual effort beating several Great Britain defenders and firing off a powerful strike from close range for the winner to give Australia the gold.
16 December 2012 I Carroll signs with Mumbai Magicians
NTIS hockey star Joel Carroll has been bought by the Mumbai Magicians in the inaugural Hockey India League (HIL) auction, held on Sunday the 16th December.
The HIL is hockey’s version of the Cricket IPL with the first year of competition seeing 6 franchises competing for the title. In a different twist of selecting a hockey team, the 6 franchises each had the opportunity to select a squad of 24, compromising of 10 International Players and 14 Indian / Pakistani players from a player pool consisting of 14 nationalities over 152 players.
Joel was one of 25 Australian players who had put their names forward for the auction in hope of being a part of the HIL in 2013.
The Magicians purchased Carroll for $56,000, making him the second most expensive player on the Magicians list, behind Indian superstar & franchise marquee player Sandeep Singh.
Carroll’s price clearly indicates his standing in the international hockey community and is just reward for an outstanding 2012 season. That season included an Olympic Bronze medal, a record 5th consecutive Champions Trophy Gold medal and a player of the tournament award at the International Super 9’s series.
The Mumbai Magicians have a distinct Aussie flavour with the team being coached by Kookaburras' head coach Ric Charlesworth and current Kookaburras Matthew Swann, Glenn Turner & Matthew Butturini.

9 December 2012 I Carroll wins Champions Trophy Gold
NTIS Hockey athlete, Joel Carroll, has helped the Kookaburras to win the Gold Medal in the final of the Champions Trophy in Melbourne. The Kookaburras beat The Netherlands 2-1 in the first period of extra time, after the scores were locked at 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Kieran Govers smashed a spectacular reverse tomahawk past Dutch goalkeeper, Jaap Stockman, to score the winning golden goal. It was the Kookaburras fifth consecutive Champions Trophy win and the second for Carroll, who was part of Australia's winning team in 2010.
25 November 2012 I MacGillivray Assistant Coach on AIS Tour
NTIS Rugby League Coach, Duncan MacGillivray, has been selected to the position of Assistant Coach for the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Schoolboys Rugby League tour of the UK and France. MacGillivray will meet the team mid tour for games against the Welsh Under 18s, England Students and the British Community Lions. Also representing the AIS is NTIS athlete Luke Conaghty, who will be playing fullback and wing.
18 November 2012 I Afuhaamango Triple Gold at World Championships
NTIS Swimmer, Tahnee Afuhaamango, has won three Gold Medals and a Bronze at the Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation (DSISO) World Championships, in Loano Italy.
On day 1 of the meet she was 2 seconds faster than her nearest rival and won Gold in the final of the 50m Butterfly. She then backed up that performance, anchoring the Australian 4 x 50m freestyle relay team with the fastest swim in the final to win Gold again. Of the 32 swimmers who competed in the relay final, Tahnee's swim was almost 3 seconds faster that the second fastest time.
On day 2 Tahnee won a Bronze Medal in the 50m freestyle final and backed up later with a strong anchor swim in the 4 x 200m freestyle final to win Australia her third Gold Medal.
17 November 2012 I Hayward wins Bronze Medal at Sultan Johor Cup
NTIS Hockey athlete, Jeremy Hayward, has won a Bronze Medal competing for Australia at the Sultan of Johor Cup tournament in Malaysia. Australia defeated Pakistan 3-2 in the bronze medal playoff. The game was level at 2-2 after regulation time and Australia was able to convert an extra time penalty corner to secure the win.

NTIS Hockey athlete, Jason Hullick, has been selected as one of 24 athletes to attend Hockey Australia's National Men's Futures Camp, to be conducted in Sydney from 11-16 January 2013.
16 November 2012 I Winch selected for Australian Schoolgirls Netball team
NTIS Netball scholarship athlete, Rebecca Winch, has been selected to play for the Australian 16 and Under School Sport Netball Team. Her selection was based on the strength of her performances while competing for the Northern Territory at the National 16 and Under Netball Championships, held in Darwin during May this year. The Australian team will compete at the International Netball Championships in Rotorua, New Zealand, in May 2013.

NTIS Swimmer, Tahnee Afuhaamango, is on the eve of competing for Australia at the 6th Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation (DSISO) World Championships. NTIS Squash athlete Rhys Dowling claimed his fifth National Junior Championships when he won the Boys 17 Years age group with a marathon 11-7, 5-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-6 win over Victorian Sam Etjemai.
13 August 2012 I Carroll wins Olympic Bronze
NTIS Hockey athlete Joel Carroll has won a Bronze Medal at the 2012 London Olympics. The Kookaburras beat Great Britain 3-1 in the Bronze Medal playoff game. The scores were 1-1 at half time and the Aussies scored two unanswered second half goals to claim the win.
The Kookaburras finished their Olympic tournament with 4 wins and two draws. Their only loss was to Germany (4-2) in the semi-final, which relegated them to the Bronze Medal game. Carroll was solid in defence all tournament for his country, assisting the Australians to conceed only 10 goals in 7 games. Germany defeated Holland 2-1 in the final to claim the title of Olympic Champions.
6 July 2012 I Abbott injury forces Olympic withdrawal
NTIS Hockey striker Des Abbott has been replaced in the Kookaburras Olympic team due to an ongoing knee injury. The injury has failed to improve since his selection last month. It is a massive blow to Des, his family and all of his supporters, just 2 weeks short of the London Olympics. NTIS Hockey athletes Des Abbott and Joel Carroll have been named in a 25 man Australian squad to compete in the VISA International Hockey Tournament Olympic Test Event and following European Tour Test series against Belgium and Germany. The Australian squad departs on the 26 of April and is in final selection mode for the upcoming Olympics. The VISA International Hockey Tournament Olympic Test Event will be held at the London Olympic venues. 1 February 2012 I Andrews and Logan selected to Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence
NTIS Cricket scholarship holders Thomas Andrews and Joel Logan have been invited to attend the 2012 edition of the National Under 18 talent camp. This is to be held at Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence in Brisbane later this month.
NTIS Coach Shane McDermott was suitably excited ”to see two of the Territory’s young spinners getting the opportunity to attend. Both players have amazing skills and potential and have been rewarded for their consistent performances at the Under 17 and Under 19 National Championships”.
31 January 2012 I Cartwright wins AIS Rugby League medal
NTIS scholarship holder Dylan Cartwright has won the Col Matthews medal for his efforts on the Australian Institute of Sport tour of France and the United Kingdom in December 2011. The month-long tour involved games against France, Wales, the England Academy and the British Community Lions.
Dylan Played four of the five games, including a start at lock in the 38-24 victory over the Lions. Also featuring in the tour was another NTIS scholarship holder, Chris Smith, who is now contracted with the Penrith Panthers U18 SG Ball team.
2012 Prohibited List released
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has released the 2012 Prohibited List which will come into effect on 1 January 2012.
The major change to the 2012 List which will affect Australian athletes and support personnel is to inhaled formoterol.
In its announcement of the 2012 List WADA advised that, “The List prohibits the administration of all beta-2 agonists except salbutamol (maximum 1600 micrograms over 24 hours), salmeterol when taken by inhalation, and now formoterol (maximum 36 micrograms taken over 24 hours).
”WADA also has a monitoring program that focuses on substances which are not on the Prohibited List, but which it wishes to monitor in order to detect patterns of misuse in sport. WADA has confirmed that in 2012 it will be monitoring the effects nicotine can have on performance when taken in oral tobacco products such as snus. WADA stressed that it was not the Agency’s intention to target smokers.

11 December 2011 Abbott in Kookaburras Champions Trophy win
Des Abbott and the Kookaburras Australian Hockey team overcame a determined Spain to win the Champions Trophy final 1-0 in Auckland. A late penalty corner was eventually converted by Eddie Ockenden, after a scramble in the goal circle. Coach Ric Charlesworth was pleased with the way the Australians defended, in what what he described as a very tough, close match.

NTIS athletes Adrian Lockley and Leon Hayward have been selected to play for Australia ‘A’ in the matches versus New Zealand, India and Pakistan in Rockingham and Mandurah in October 2011.
